Appalachian Highlands Community Dental Charities (AHCDC) is the nonprofit organization that helps make expanded access to dental care possible throughout Southwest Virginia. By securing charitable donations, grants, sponsorships, and community partnerships, AHCDC supports Appalachian Highlands Community Dental Center’s efforts to provide affordable, high-quality oral healthcare through patient funds, human capital (dental clinician positions), facility expansion and improvements, advanced technology and equipment, and workforce development.
Why is a safety-net dental charity needed?
Southwest Virginia faces a significant shortage of dental providers, making it difficult for many patients to access affordable care (Southwest Virginia has only about 40% as many dentists per capita as Virginia overall). Southwest Virginia has approximately 25 dentists per 100,000 residents compared with 62 per 100,000 statewide. More than 4,000 patients in the region are on a wait list for dental services, and many suffer from untreated oral health conditions that affect their overall health, nutrition, employment opportunities, and quality of life.
Southwest Virginia is designated as a dental health professional shortage area in many communities (dental desert). Thousands of patients in need face barriers to care due to financial limitations, transportation challenges, provider shortages, or lack of dental insurance. Without treatment, oral health problems can become medical emergencies that affect overall health, employment, and quality of life.
Who receives care through the dental center?
The dental center primarily serves uninsured, underinsured, and economically disadvantaged adults throughout Southwest Virginia. The organization also works with community partners to support individuals in recovery programs and others facing significant barriers to healthcare access. The dental center serves children ages 10+ and adults.
How many people does AHCDC serve and what services are available?
Appalachian Highlands Community Dental Center is a dental home to more than 9,000 patients.
Services include preventive cleanings, dental sealants, fillings, tooth extractions, dentures, root canal therapy, crowns and bridgework, periodontal (gum disease) treatment, oral cancer screenings, dental implants, and bonding and restorative procedures. Services are determined based on patient needs and provider recommendations.
Do you accept dental insurance?
The Dental Center’s primary mission is to serve patients who may not have access to traditional dental care. Patients should contact the clinic directly to discuss eligibility, payment options, and available programs. Appalachian Highlands Community Dental Center accepts uninsured patients and those who have Virginia Medicaid.

AHCDC’s Board of Directors meets quarterly to review the organization’s financial position, monitor revenue and expense trends, and provide strategic oversight. In addition, the Board meets monthly with our outsourced accounting team to review financial statements, ensure fiscal responsibility, and maintain sound financial management practices.
